There were lots of Buddhas and they stand for different things, health, fertility, knowledge, success in your job, good family relationships, and so on. There was a building just dedicated to blessing the spirits of loved ones. People buy a card, which looks like a bookmark with a ribbon and they pay the monks approximately $8000 yuan a year (about $1150) to add a photo of the loved one to the bookmark and hang it in the room and say a prayer for the person's spirit every day. Matthew quickly did a calculation which included the number of bookmarks in each row, times the number of rows, times the number of frames on each wall, times the number of walls and determined that the building generates approximately $10 million each year for the temple. We are a little incredulous about this, however, he insists that his math is correct. :) |

Linda, I just wanted to cry when I read about Shanna's meltdown. It is a good thing but just thinking of how she must feel makes me sad for her. She is so blessed to have your family that understands what she needs.
Skype with Kaja in the morning! So excited to hear about Xiang! :)
Hi Linda,
I just got home from my Shantou trip where I met Xiang. She is wonderful and deserves a great family. I asure you that our Shantou children have been loved lots and lots. It is bright, colorful and there is a very good and loving vibe.
I couldn't read your blog in China, it was blocked so I just catched up the posts. Your girl is beautiful, congratulations!
How great that she is bursting into tears and is showing her feelings, priceles!!
Enjoy the rest of your trip, I miss China already!

hi linda! i've been reading every day and enjoying every word! i am glad shanna is adjusting well and really glad to hear about the moments of crying. as you say, it needs to come out. lulu didn't cry the entire time we were there except for a few 5 second sobs which she quickly stiffled. i see now that her cries when we got home were releasing that anguish. it's hard to watch but you are right, so necessary. all she cries out just makes more room in her heart to be filled with your family's love!
oh are you going to shantou? if you are can you email me if you would be able to maybe visit lulu's finding spot? no pressure to visit at all but if you are going, i'll send you her info and if you happen to be near it then great. but if not, no worries! pfinn77athotmaildotcom

Hi!
I'm glad the hard times are only coming in small doses and Shanna is learning to trust her new family!
I'm amazed at her language explosion; incredible!
I know you all must be getting homesick about now, but enjoy the warm weather while you have a chance. It's frigid here!

We have a daughter who loved Yang Yang and it was a source of comfort to her. If you go to one of the malls in Guangzhou (don't know the name) they sell Yang Yang on DVD. She asks for it every now and then.
